Under Section 8.J.3. of the CBA, once a Reserve has been assigned a pairing, they may trade that pairing for days off with a Lineholder.
The important part is what happens after the trade:
- The Reserve is trading the entire assigned pairing for days off.
- The Reserve’s guarantee is reduced based on the number of Reserve availability days vacated, not the value of the pairing.
- Those days become days off. The Reserve may not simply pick up another trip on those vacated Reserve days and keep the original guarantee.
- If a multi-day pairing is traded away, the Reserve may contact Crew Scheduling and ask to have Reserve days and guarantee restored for all days of the vacated pairing except the first day.
- If the Reserve does not have those days restored, they remain days off and the applicable Reserve guarantee is reduced.
In Basic Terms
If you are on Reserve, receive an assigned pairing, and then advertise/trade that pairing away for days off:
No, you cannot just pick up another trip on those vacated Reserve days.
You traded the assignment for days off, and your Reserve guarantee is reduced for the Reserve days you gave up.
For a multi-day pairing, you may call crew scheduling and request to be placed back on Reserve for the remaining days of the pairing after the first day. If restored, the corresponding Reserve guarantee is also restored.
